Twins Enter Stretch Run

Back in early June when the Twins had an 11 1/2 game lead in the AL Central, it seemed like a sure thing they were going to win the division. But then Cleveland went on a roll and the Twins, while they still have a very good 78-51 record, started to not play quite as well as they did in April and May, and their lead is now down to 2 1/2 games. While it is still likely the Twins will win the AL Central (Baseball Reference currently gives them a 78.4% chance to win the division), it is far from a sure thing.

The main reason why the Twins are still predicted to win the division is because they have the easiest remaining strength of schedule in MLB. This week, though, the Twins have played Chicago and Detroit at home (two “easy” teams) and are only 2-3 so far against them, with one more game against Detroit today.

The Twins’ hitting has been great all year. They have hit 251 home runs (a.k.a. bombas!) and are only 15 home runs away from the MLB single-season record, which they should pass easily. The problem is their pitching. The bullpen has been shaky all season and the starters, even their ace Jose Berrios, have not pitched well lately. Their defense has become a big problem too, especially in the second half of the season.

Last night against Detroit, Kyle Gibson pitched poorly and was taken out of the game with Detroit leading 4-1 (thanks to a few defensive mistakes too by the Twins). The Twins ended up winning 8-5, thanks to some more home runs. But if the Twins make the playoffs, they can’t rely on a few home runs a game to make up for poor pitching and defense, especially when they face really good pitchers.

The Twins play two more series against Cleveland, one in Minnesota and one in Cleveland, so the next month will be exciting! If the Twins improve their pitching and defense, they could go deep into the playoffs!
