The New Guys

This post is not exactly about Target Field, but I think you will be interested in what the Minnesota Twins have done so far during the 2009-2010 off-season.

The first key transaction the Twins made in the 2009-2010 off-season was on Friday, November 6, when they traded center fielder Carlos Gomez  to the Milwaukee Brewers for shortstop J.J. Hardy. This trade worked out for both teams because the Twins had an extra outfielder, and the Brewers had an extra infielder.

Then, Carl Pavano, the veteran pitcher who the Twins signed during last season, re-signed with the Twins on Monday, December 7.  This was important because Pavano is capable of pitching many innings in a game and was very valuable to the Twins at the end of last season.

Just a few days ago , on Tuesday, January 26, Jim Thome got signed by the Twins when they agreed on a 1 year, $1.5 million contract. Thome, a 39 year old veteran, is a former Chicago White Sox player. He also is 12th on the career home run list with 564, and 57 of those have come against the Twins, which is the most against the Twins among all current players. He will most likely be the DH (designated hitter), or come off the bench.

These are just the key transactions made by the Twins, but to see all of the transactions, go to:

There is still one HUGE question that has not been answered: Will the Twins be able to give Joe Mauer a contract extension?

  1. The Twins are getting ready for a new season with some good trades. They better sign Mauer!!
He is a MN. guy and I think he will sign. $ isn’t everything and he is a HERO in Mn. Great entry Sam. You had good information one more time.

  2. You’ve probably told me all of this to me before, but I am so happy to read this summary!

  3. Thanks for the summary! I hope Thome plays well for the Twins, but I really liked Kubel as our DH, I wonder what they have planned for him and our outfield?

  4. MP, Look at this article and read paragraghs 5 through 7 to see the answer to what the Twins have in store for Thome:

We think that Span has center field, Young and Cuddyer will play left and right field with Kubel as the back-up OF/DH.

A source tells WCCO-TV’s Mark Rosen that American League MVP Joe Mauer has come to a preliminary agreement with the Minnesota Twins for a 10-year contract extension. Other media networks are saying this report is false. STAY TUNED!
